There are primarily three dates that are of relevance for a patent; filing date, publication date and priority date. Filing Date is the date on which application for the patent is made to respective patent office. For each patent, the publication date is the date on which particular issue of Patent Office Journal containing details of specific patent application is published. Priority date is the first date on which invention was first disclosed in any country. Where an application for patent in India (or any other country) is based on a previously filed patent application in any other country, the priority date of that patent shall be the date of the previously filed application in which the invention was first disclosed.

Finding keywords is not difficult. You may need to brainstorm terms to describe your invention based on its purpose, composition and use. Use all relevant alternatives and synonyms for identified terms.

Search string is the combination of key words along with Boolean operators like AND, OR, NOT used for getting the related results/hits. For example, if one wants to search patents related to “armed chair”, then he/she may use a search string like ((chair AND arm) NOT stool), or its many variations.

Directly searching for relevant classifications is tricky. You may find initial relevant Cooperative Patent Classification using the USPTO website’s Site Search box, using your identified keywords. In the Site search box found in the top right hand corner of the home page enter “CPC Scheme [plus keywords(s) describing invention]”; for example, if you were trying to find CPC Classifications for patents related to umbrellas, you would enter “CPC Scheme umbrella”. Scan the resulting classification’s Class Scheme (class schedules) to determine the most relevant classification to your invention. One more effective option is to use keywords to initially find some related patents and pick the classification codes from there.

In that case, you can try to initially find at least somewhat related patent document. When you find a patent that is in the area you are focusing on, you may look at its cited and citing prior art references. Each patent cites several other patents in the same field that were considered during the patent examination process. These citations can link you to multiple on-point patents. Many patent search engines include other patents that list that patent as a citation as well (citing references). This can help you collect a large number of relevant patents.
